Etymology: < classical Latin ostentāt-, past participial stem of ostentāre ostentate v. + -ive suffix. Compare post-classical Latin ostentativus (of a type of oratory) demonstrative (16th cent.). Compare slightly earlier ostentive adj., and earlier ostentatious adj.
Now rare.
