Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French ossements.
Etymology: < French ossements (plural) bones, especially of the dead (13th cent. in Old French; 1170 in singular in sense ‘skeleton’) < post-classical Latin ossamenta (1209, 1419 in British sources, 13th cent. in a continental source), plural of ossamentum < classical Latin oss- , os bone (see os n.1) + -mentum -ment suffix. N.E.D. (1903) gives the pronunciation of the plural as (ǫ·smĕnts) /ˈɒsmənts/.
Obsolete. rare.
The bones of the dead; bones from which the flesh has been stripped.
