Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek ὀρνιθίας , -an suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ὀρνιθίας the north wind which brought the birds of passage ( < ὀρνιθ- , ὄρνις bird (see ornitho- comb. form + -ίας , suffix forming nouns and adjectives) + -an suffix; hence χειμὼν ὀρνιθίας (Aristophanes Acharnians, in the passage translated in quot. 1830) a tempest of birds, an ‘Ornithian gale’. Compare French †ornithies (plural) the winds which brought the birds of passage (1690). N.E.D. (1903) gives the pronunciation as (ǫɹni·þiăn) /ɔːˈnɪθɪən/.
