Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin ōrnātiōn-, ōrnātiō.
Etymology: < classical Latin ōrnātiōn-, ōrnātiō decoration, ornamentation < ōrnāt- , past participial stem of ōrnāre orn v. + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare Middle French ornation (1501). N.E.D. (1903) gives the pronunciation as (ǫɹnēi·ʃən) /ɔːˈneɪʃən/.
Obsolete.
The condition of being adorned; the action of adorning or ornamenting something. Also: that with which something is adorned; an adornment.
