单词 ornate
释义

ornateadj.

Brit. /ɔːˈneɪt/, U.S. /ɔrˈneɪt/
Forms: late Middle English–1500s ornat, late Middle English– ornate; Scottish pre-1700 ornait, pre-1700 ornat, pre-1700 1700s– ornate.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin ōrnātus, ōrnāre.
Etymology: < classical Latin ōrnātus properly arrayed, richly adorned or embellished, (of literary style) elaborate, use as adjective of past participle of ōrnāre orn v.Most 18th-cent. dictionaries, including Sheridan (1780) and Walker (1791), record stress on the first syllable. Webster (1890) records stress on the second syllable only, but in other 19th-cent. American and British dictionaries stress varies between the first and second syllables. N.E.D. (1903) gives an alternative pronunciation of (ǭ·ɹnĕt) /ˈɔːnət/, evidenced also in metre (e.g. quots. 1538 at sense 2, 1829 at sense 3). Editions of D. Jones Eng. Pronouncing Dict. up to 1988 record a pronunciation with stress on the first syllable as a less common variant.
