Etymology: < Bengali Oṛiyā, Hindi Oṛiyā (also as Uṛiyā), and Oriya Oṛiā, all ultimately < Sanskrit Oḍra, the name of an originally Dravidian people in eastern India and (in plural) of their country, corresponding in area approximately to the present-day state of Orissa ( < later Sanskrit Oḍra-viṣaya territory of the Odras).The existence of the Odras as a nation can be traced to the end of the first cent. In forms with U- after Hindi Uṛiyā, itself after Sanskrit Uḍra, variant of Oḍra.
