Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French oreillon, orillon.
Etymology: < Middle French, French oreillon (1599 in this sense), orillon (1676 in this sense, also denoting an ear-shaped appendage, ‘ear’ of any vessel, etc.; 1230 in Old French in sense ‘blow on the ear’, 1290 in sense ‘mouldboard of a plough’) < oreille ear (see oreille n.) + -on -oon suffix. Compare Italian orecchione orecchion n.
Fortification. Now historical.
A projecting tower or shoulder at the corner of a bastion, between the face and a flank, used to defend the flank.
