Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian ottetto.
Etymology: < Italian ottetto octet n., with omission of the ending after duet n., quartet n., quintet n., etc.The use of the Italian form is recorded slightly earlier in English contexts denoting Mendelssohn's Op. 20 (see quots. 1848, 1853).
Music. Obsolete.
= octet n. 2.Usually with reference to Mendelssohn's Op. 20 (1825, published 1833).
