Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin orīginātiōn-, orīginātiō.
Etymology: < classical Latin orīginātiōn- , orīginātiōderivation of words, tracing of origin (Quintilian: see sense 2), in post-classical Latin also origination (in logic: first half of the 14th cent. in British sources), origin (c1470 in a British source) < orīgin- , orīgō origin n. + -ātiō -ation suffix, as if < a verb originare , although this is first attested in post-classical Latin (see originate v.). In quot. c1443 at sense 1a perhaps via Middle French origination origin, provenance (15th–16th cent.).
