Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin orīganum, origanus.
Etymology: < classical Latin orīganum (in post-classical Latin also origanus, 4th cent.) wild marjoram < ancient Greek ὀρίγανον , ὀρίγανος an acrid herb; in manuscripts often written ὀρείγανος , as if < ὄρει , dative singular of ὄρος mountain (see oro- comb. form1) + γάνος brightness, joy, pride (see ganoid adj. and n.), but probably a loanword; the plant comes from Africa. Any of the perennial herbs and subshrubs constituting the Eurasian genus Origanum (family Lamiaceae ( Labiatae)), esp. wild marjoram or oregano, O. vulgare; (in form Origanum) the genus itself. Also: the strongly aromatic foliage of these plants, used in cooking and as the source of essential oils. In early use also: †any of several other aromatic herbs of the family Lamiaceae ( Labiatae), esp. pennyroyal, Mentha pulegium, and wild thyme, Thymus serpyllum (obsolete).Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) II. 588.
