Etymology: < Japanese origami (1603 as uoricami in Vocabulario da Lingoa de Iapam: see note) < ori- folding (combining stem of oru to fold) + -gami, combining form of kami paper.Japanese origami is first attested in the sense ‘certificate, document of authentication consisting of a folded sheet’ (12th cent.). The art of paper-folding for ceremonial and decorative purposes was called orisue, orikata, or orimono until the late 19th or early 20th cent., when the word origami was perhaps reintroduced after German Papierfalten or English paper-folding at the time of the adoption of the kindergarten movement in Japan. As an art form it was only popularized outside Japan from the 1950s. It is recorded earlier in English context as a Japanese word:1922 F.
