Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French orifice; Latin ōrificium.
Etymology: < Middle French, French orifice opening, aperture (1362–5; 1304 in Old French) and its etymon classical Latin ōrificium (2nd cent. a.d.) < ōri- , combining form of ōr- , ōs mouth (see oral adj.) + -fic- ( < facere to make: see fact n., int., and adv.) + -ium, neuter of -ius, suffix forming adjectives.
An opening or aperture, esp. one forming the communication between a cavity or hollow organ and the surface of an animal or plant body. Cf. mouth n., os n.3, ostium n.
