Etymology: < orient v. + -eer suffix2 + -ing suffix1. In sense 1 after Dutch oriëntering getting one's bearings (1870–2 in the passage translated in quot. 1874 at sense 1). In sense 2 probably after Swedish orientering (1931 or earlier in this sense); compare mountaineering n. Compare later orienteer v.
