1922 E. J. Warburg in Biochem. Jrnl. 16 155 In physiology for questions of osmotic pressure..it is the total number of dissolved particles that is the determining factor... I have therefore employed the expression osmolar concentration.
1930 Q. Rev. Biol. 5 54/1 In various concentrations of sodium chloride up to 0.15 osmolar, the rates of urine formation are equal to that in tap water.
1944 Proc. Amer. Philos. Soc. 88 152/1 If we divide degrees of freezing point depression by 1·86 we obtain osmolar concentration. Multiplying osmolar concentration by cubic centimeters of urine, defines the total output of solutes as milliosmoles.
1971 W. S. Beck Human Design x. 348/2 The osmotic concentration measured by freezing point depression is properly termed an osmolal concentration—milliosmols of solute per kilogram of solvent—in contrast to an osmolar concentration—milliosmols of solute per liter of solution. The two values differ only slightly in ordinary dilute solutions, however.
1985 Jrnl. Parenteral & Enteral Nutrition 9 296 Patients appeared to tolerate peripheral infusion with high osmolar solutions just as well as lower osmolar solutions.
2003 Clin. Nephrol. 60 205 We present a patient who developed severe anion gap metabolic acidosis with no osmolar gap and hypokalemia, consequent to episodic ethylene glycol ingestion.
