Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French otocyste.
Etymology: < French otocyste (H. Lacaze-Duthiers 1872, in Arch. de zool. expér. et gén. 1 112) < oto- oto- comb. form + cyste cyst n.
Zoology and Embryology.
In certain invertebrates: a small organ containing calcareous particles and functioning in the maintenance of balance and orientation (= statocyst n. at stato- comb. form 3). Also: the embryonic precursor of the inner ear in vertebrates.
