Etymology: < ancient Greek ὠτο-, combining form (in e.g. ὠτόρρυτος having a discharge from the ears) of ὠτ-, οὖς ear < a suffixed form of the Indo-European base of ear n.1 Compare French oto-, German oto-.Earliest in loanwords from Greek and Latin in the early 17th cent.(e.g. otenchyte n., otalgia n.); formations are found from the first half of the 19th cent. (e.g. otolite n.). In French, the first classical loans are found from the late 16th cent. (compare otalgie otalgia n.); native formations are found from the final decade of the 18th cent. (compare otologie otology n., ototomie ototomy n. , otographie otography n. ).
