Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin ōtiant-, ōtiāns.
Etymology: < classical Latin ōtiant-, ōtiāns, present participle of ōtiārī to be at leisure < ōtium otium n. In sense 2 after post-biblical Hebrew naḥ silent, quiescent (as in ālep naḥ silent aleph, aleph otiant). Compare earlier otiation n.
rare in later use.
1. Inactive, doing nothing, indolent. Obsolete.Apparently only found in the N. Amer. Rev.
