Etymology: < scientific Latin Osedax, genus name (2004 in the source of quot. 2004) < classical Latin os bone (see os n.¹) + edāx (see edacious adj.).

A genus of marine (chiefly deep-sea) polychaete worms (family Siboglinidae) which live on the bones of dead whales (and possibly other marine vertebrates); (also osedax) a worm of this genus.Female Osedax have tubular bodies with feathery plumes which function as gills at the anterior end, and branching root-like structures at the posterior end, within the host bone. They have no digestive system and obtain nutrients from symbiotic heterotrophic bacteria. Males are microscopic, paedomorphic, and live within the females.

2004 G. W. Rouse et al. in Science 30 July 668 Molecular and morphological evidence revealed that Osedax belongs to the Siboglinidae, which includes pogonophoran and vestimentiferan worms from deep-sea vents, seeps, and anoxic basins.

2005 Independent 19 Oct. 14/3 ‘Osedax has no mouth or intestines and derives all its food from these symbiotic bacteria that the worm has somehow managed to acquire during its development’, Dr Glover explained.

2010 Sci. Amer. (U.K. ed.) Feb. 68/2 Osedax has little appendages that stick out into the water column for gas exchange but can be retracted into a mucous tube if disturbed.
