Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Oscin.
Etymology: < German Oscin (O. Hesse 1892, in Liebig's Ann. der Chemie 271 114), shortened < Hyoscin hyoscine n.; compare -ine suffix5.
Chemistry.
A tropane alkaloid, C8H13NO2, which is an isomer of scopine and a degradation product of hyoscine. Now usually called scopoline.

1892 Jrnl. Chem. Soc. 62 1498 The author proposes that Ladenburg's pseudotropine or hydroxytropine should be called oscine; the composition of oscine is C8H13NO2, not C8H15NO.
1938 L. Small in H. Gilman Org. Chem. II. xii. 1051 The latter [sc. scopine] undergoes rearrangement with great ease into scopoline (oscine), which is the basic product obtained when scopolamine is hydrolyzed in the usual way.
1955 Jrnl. Chem. Soc. 3506 Oscine..and noroscine..were chosen as models for further ‘direct’ and ‘reverse’ quaternisation experiments.
1968 I. L. Finar Org. Chem. (ed. 4) II. xiv. 640 More vigorous hydrolysis of hyoscine with acids or alkalis produces oscine (scopoline), which is formed by the isomerisation of scopine.
