Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: Latin ōrēmus, ōrāre; French orémus.
Etymology: < classical Latin ōrēmus ‘let us pray’, 1st person plural subjunctive of ōrāre orate v.; in quot. 1795 via French orémus (1560 in Middle French).Compare earlier use of the Latin word in an English context:OE Ælfric Let. to Wulfsige (Corpus Cambr.) in B. Fehr Die Hirtenbriefe Ælfrics (1914) 166 And cweþe se mæssepreost be sone: Oremus: Preceptis salutaribus moniti and pater noster oð ende.1483 W. Caxton tr.
