单词 oreille
释义

oreillen.

Forms: 1500s oreylle.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French oreiller.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French oreiller (c1334 or earlier in Anglo-Norman), specific use of oreiller pillow (1140 in Old French; French oreiller ) < oreille ear (c1100; end of 10th cent. as aurelia < classical Latin auricula auricle n.) + -er -er suffix2. Compare post-classical Latin auriculare pillow (early 9th cent.; a1100, c1360 in British sources; c1323 in a British source as orriale). The form oreylle perhaps ultimately reflects an error for Anglo-Norman and Middle French oreiller; the form oreiller is more usual in modern works on Heraldry.
Heraldry. Obsolete. rare.
A representation of a pillow or cushion used as a heraldic charge. In medieval heraldry the oreille is normally shown as lozenge-shaped, whereas in modern heraldry it is usually shown more representationally, and usually with tassles.
