单词 oregon
释义

Oregonn.

Brit. /ˈɒrᵻɡ(ə)n/, U.S. /ˈɔrəˌɡɑn/, /ˈɔrəɡ(ə)n/
Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Oregon.
Etymology: < the name of the U.S. state of Oregon in the north-west of the United States (1859), and of the earlier Oregon Territory and River.‘The name Oregon, which first appeared in print in Jonathan Carver Travels through the Interior Part of North America (1778) and was popularized as the name of the Columbia River by its use in the poem “Thanatopsis” (1817) by William Cullen Bryant, was first used in a 1765 petition to George III by the British American military officer Robert Rogers, who gave “Ouragon” as what “the Indians” called the semi-legendary River of the West then sought by explorers. Accepting Rogers' statement, this name is most likely the word wauregan “good, beautiful” of Connecticut pidgin Algonquian and local English, learned from Mohegan Indians and applied to the westward-flowing river reported by A.-S. Le Page Du Pratz Histoire de la Louisiane (1758), to be called by local Indians la Belle Rivière “the beautiful river”.’ (Dr I. Goddard).
