Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: ore n.2, delf n.
Etymology: < ore n.2 + delf n., perhaps arising through misapprehension of ordeal n. (see forms and discussion at that entry).The English word also occurs in very late copies of medieval Latin texts, suggesting currency in the Middle English period (compare note at orrest n. for what is probably a similar misapprehension in the same texts):1662 ( Ledger-bk. Vale Royal Abbey in LCRS (1914) 68 132 [We grant..that, in the manors aforesaid, they shall have] soc and sac..ordelf, orest, [and amends of bread and ale].1662 ( Ledger-bk. Vale Royal Abbey in LCRS (1914) 68 136 [And by] ordelf [he claims to have the mining of gold and silver and all other metals in his lordship].
