Origin: Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin orecticon, orecticus; Greek ὀρεκτικός.
Etymology: As noun < post-classical Latin orecticon (usually in plural, orectica) medicine for the stomach stimulating appetite (1542 or earlier), use as noun of neuter of orecticus (see below); as adjective < post-classical Latin orecticus appetitive (1540 or earlier), stimulating appetite (1549 or earlier), or its etymon ancient Greek ὀρεκτικός appetitive (Aristotle), in Hellenistic Greek also stimulating appetite (Dioscorides) < ὀρεκτός stretched out, longed for ( < ὀρέγειν to stretch out, grasp after, desire, cognate with classical Latin regere to direct: see regent adj.) + -ικός -ic suffix (hence a parallel formation to classical Latin rectus , Gothic raihts : see right adj. and int.).With use as noun compare ancient Greek τὸ ὀρεκτικόν, although this denotes the impulsive or conative faculty (Aristotle).
