orvietann.

Brit. /ˌɔːvɪˈeɪtn/, /ˌɔːvɪˈiːtn/, U.S. /ˌɔrviˈeɪtn/, /ˌɔrviˈitn/
Forms: 1600s orvietane, 1600s–1800s orvietan, 1700s orvieton, 1700s orvitan, 1900s– orviétan. Also with capital initial.
Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Italian. Etymons: French orviétan; Italian orvietano.
Etymology: < French orviétan (1625) or its probable etymon Italian orvietano (1633 as †Orvetano , but probably earlier) < Orvieto , the name of a city in central Italy (see Orvieto n.) + -ano -an suffix, the inventor, Girolamo Ferrante, being a native of this city.Recorded earlier in English context in the form Orviatano in the following:1647 S. Winter Nothing without God (single sheet) He hath also a singular Antidote, or counter poison, called Orviatano, very good against all poison, soveraigne against the Plague, the Collick, gripings of the guts, and all manner of surfets. In form orvieton perhaps an alteration for the purposes of rhyme:1706 E. Ward Hudibras Redivivus II. i. 23 My last rare Med'cine, and the best, Fam'd thro' the World above the rest, Is to all Courts and Kingdoms known By th' Name of my Orvieton.
Now historical.
A medicinal preparation held to be a universal antidote against poisons; an alexipharmic electuary. Hence, more generally and figurative: an antidote.
