Etymology: < classical Latin Ortygius, adjective ( < Ortygia (ancient Greek Ὀρτυγία), the name of a Greek island in the Cyclades (now Delos), also of an island forming part of the city of Syracuse in Sicily) + -an suffix.The name ancient Greek Ὀρτυγία derives from ὀρτυγ-, ὄρτυξ a quail, and could therefore be interpreted as Quail-island.
