Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: ortho- comb. form, -tropic comb. form.
Etymology: < ortho- comb. form + -tropic comb. form, after German orthotrop (J. von Sachs 1882, in Arbeiten Bot. Inst. Würzburg 2 226). Compare plagiotropic adj. Compare also orthotropism n.
1. Botany. Of a stem, root, etc.: having a tendency to grow in a vertical direction, upwards or downwards. More widely: growing directly towards or away from the source of a stimulus. Contrasted with plagiotropic.
