Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Greek ὠτ-, οὖς, ἀκουστικός.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ὠτ-, οὖς ear (see oto- comb. form) + ἀκουστικός acoustic adj. Compare ancient Greek ὠτακουστής otacust n., French otacoustique , adjective (1721) and noun (1845 in sense ‘science of hearing’). Compare slightly earlier otacousticon n.Both senses are recorded in dictionaries up until Webster's Third New Internat. Dict. (1961) but appear not to be in current use. N.E.D. (1903) gives the pronunciation as (ōutăkū·stik, -ăkɑu·stik) /əʊtəˈkuːstɪk/ /-əˈkaʊstɪk/.
