Latreille Familles naturelles du règne animal (1825) 233). In sense 2 after scientific Latin Ostracodermi, subclass name (see ostracoderm n. and adj.). Compare post-classical Latin ostracodermos hard-shelled (6th cent.), ancient Greek ὀστρακόδερμος hard-shelled.
