Etymology: < classical Latin ostracītis a variety of cadmia, calamine (Pliny) < Hellenistic Greek ὀστρακῖτις < ὄστρακον ostracon n. + -ῖτις -itis suffix. Compare French ostracite (1701 in this sense). N.E.D. (1903) gives the pronunciation as (ǫstrăsəi·tis) /ɒstrəˈsaɪtɪs/.
