Etymology: < post-classical Latin ostracion (Gesner 1558) < Hellenistic Greek ὀστράκιον shellfish, in ancient Greek small earthen vessel < ancient Greek ὄστρακον ostracon n. + -ιον, diminutive suffix.

Zoology.
