a. A French order of knighthood instituted by Henri III of France in 1578. Now historical.The Order was officially abolished in July 1830, but its activities continued for some years after that date. [After Middle French Ordre du Saint-Esprit (more fully l'Ordre et milice du Benoist Sainct Esprit, literally ‘the order and militia of the blessed Holy Spirit’ (1578)).]
