Etymology: < ortho- comb. form + kinetic adj., after German orthokinetisch (attributed to G. Wiegner by P. Tuorila 1927, in Kolloidchemische Beihefte 24 12).With sense 2 compare earlier orthokinesis n.
1. Physical Chemistry. Designating coagulation, aggregation, or flocculation of colloidal particles occurring as a result of velocity gradients in a fluid.

1927 Chem. Abstr. 21 2832 Coagulation under the influence of a motion of particles in the same direction, as in sedimentation, is called orthokinetic, and is here investigated for the first time.
