Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Orthogenesis.
Etymology: < German Orthogenesis (W. Haacke Gestaltung u. Vererbung (1893) ii. 31) < ortho- ortho- comb. form + -genesis -genesis comb. form. Compare French orthogenèse (dated 1893 in Robert Dict. alphabétique et analogique (1986)).
Biology. Now chiefly historical.
Evolutionary change proceeding consistently in one direction, esp. as supposedly produced by a tendency to accumulate similar mutations in successive generations rather than by natural selection. Also in extended use.
