Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Orbitoides.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Orbitoides, genus name (A. d'Orbigny: see quot. 1848) < classical Latin orbita orbit n. + -oīdēs -oid suffix. Compare slightly earlier orbitoidal adj.1848 C. Lyell in Q. Jrnl. Geol. Soc. 4 i. 12 A letter reached me from M. D'Orbigny, of which I subjoin a translation:—(Paris 18th June 1847) It is a genus nearly allied to Orbitolina, and which I have named in consequence of this analogy, Orbitoides.

Of, belonging to, or designating a fossil foraminiferan of the genus Orbitoides, family Orbitoididae, or superfamily Orbitoidacea, typically having a discoid or lenticular shell.
