A misinterpretation by Halliwell (see quot. 1847) of ounde in quot. 1548 at oundy adj. as a noun; Cent. Dict. takes over Halliwell's entry and adds an additional sense on the basis of a misinterpretation of quot. c1440 at oundy adj. This entry is taken over by Funk et al. Standard Dict. Eng. Lang. (1895), but omitted from Funk & Wagnalls New Standard Dict. Eng. Lang. (1928).The form ound, first entered by Cent. Dict., is explained by N.E.D. (1903) as stemming from quot. 1548 at oundy adj. being ‘erroneously reprinted in A. Fleming's Holinshed (1587) III. 860/1, with ound for ounde’, but is more likely a modernization of the form ownd, erroneously printed by Cent. Dict. as the form in quot. c1440 at oundy adj.
