单词 oulter-le-mer
释义

oulter-le-mern.

Brit. /ˌuːltələˈmɛː/, /ˌəʊltələˈmɛː/, U.S. /ˈˌultərləˈmɛ(ə)r/
Forms: 1600s 1900s– oulter-le-mer, 1600s–1800s ouster-le-mer.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French oulter-le-mer.
Etymology: < Law French oulter-le-mer (compare quot. 1607), also ouster-le-mer , ouster le mere < Anglo-Norman oulter , oustre , variants of outre beyond (see outrance n.) + le , masculine definite article + mer (see mere n.1). N.E.D. (1903) suggests that ouster-le-mer arises from a misprint in Cowell ‘confounding the black letter l and long s’ and includes the form as a separate, spurious entry. However, oustre is a recorded variant in Anglo-Norman, and the form in ouster might have arisen or gained currency by analogy or confusion with ouster-le-main n. (which contains the unrelated French verb ouster oust v.). This confusion might also account for the use of the masculine definite article le in place of the feminine la . Compare Anglo-Norman and Old French, Middle French, French outre mer overseas, abroad (see Outremer n.) and, with ellipsis of mer, Anglo-Norman de la outre ‘from overseas, from abroad’.
Law. Now historical.
The essoin or excuse of being beyond the sea.Legal dictionaries from the 17th to the 19th centuries all have ouster-le-mer, e.g. Blount Law Dict. (1670), Jacobs New Law-dict. (10 eds., 1729–73), and Wharton Law Lex. (7 eds., 1848–83).
