Etymology: < Afrikaans oudstryder < Dutch oudstrijder veteran (19th cent.; see note below) < oud old adj. + strijder warrior ( < strijden to fight (see stride v.) + -er -er suffix¹).Not fully naturalized in English. The Dutch word originally referred to veterans from the Napoleonic Wars and the Belgian War of Independence (1830–2).

South African History.

A veteran who fought on the side of the Boer Republics, esp. in the Boer War (1899–1902). Hence, in extended use: a veteran of any war.
