Etymology: < post-classical Latin Orthoceratites (J. P. Breynius Dissertatio Physica et Polythalamius, Nova Testacorum Classe (1732) vi. 29) < ancient Greek ὀρθο- ortho- comb. form + κερατ- , κέρας horn (see kerato- comb. form) + -ίτης -ite suffix1. Compare later ceratite n.
Palaeontology.
A fossil shell of a nautiloid cephalod mollusc of the Palaeozoic or early Mesozoic eras, having a long, straight (or nearly straight) chambered shell; spec. a member of the former genus Orthoceratites or family Orthoceratidae; cf. orthoceras n. Also in Latin form Orthoceratites (in later use only as the name of a genus).
