Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Orthidae.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Orthidae, family name (S. P. Woodward Man. Mollusca (1854) ii. 229) < Orthis , genus name (J. W. Dalman 1828, in Konglika Svenska Vetenskaps Academiens handlingar 1827 96; < ancient Greek ὀρθός straight (see ortho- comb. form) + scientific Latin -is : see -id suffix2) + -idae (see -id suffix3). Compare also orthide n. and adj.According to Dalman (see reference above) the genus was so called because of its straight hinge.
