Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin orbicularis oculi.
Etymology: < scientific Latin orbicularis oculi (1797 or earlier) < post-classical Latin orbicularis (see orbicularis n.) + classical Latin oculī , genitive of oculus eye (see oculus n.). Compare earlier orbicularis palpebrarum n., and also orbicularis oris n.
Anatomy.
A muscle that encircles the orbit and passes through the eyelids, serving to close the eye. Also orbicularis oculi muscle.
