Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Orangit.

Etymology: < German Orangit (see note) < Orange orange n.¹ + -it -ite suffix¹, with reference to its colour.Coined by A. Krantz (see Ann. der Physik u. Chem. (1851) 82 586). Krantz chose the name to be readily comprehensible in as many languages as possible, and deliberately avoided a classical derivation as he felt that many mineralogists were unfamiliar with Latin and Greek.
