Forms: 1600s orangere (in sense 2), 1600s orangerii (in sense 2), 1600s– orangerie, 1700s orangarie, 1700s– orangery.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French orangerie.
Etymology: < French orangerie building where oranges are cultivated in winter (1603), part of the garden where oranges are grown in fine weather (1690) < oranger orange tree (1388 in Middle French as orengier ; < orange orange n.1 + -er : see -ar suffix2) + -ie -y suffix3; compare -ery suffix.The origin of use in sense 2 is uncertain and appears to be a purely English development.
1. A place in which orange trees are grown or kept; spec. a type of large conservatory or hothouse in which oranges or other delicate fruits can be reared where the climates does not allow them to be cultivated in the open.
