Origin: A borrowing from early Scandinavian.
Etymology: < early Scandinavian (compare Old Icelandic orrosta, Old Swedish orästa, oresta); further origin uncertain and disputed.The following examples of the form orest in very late copies of medieval Latin texts apparently show misapprehension of the Middle English word, as if < ore n.2 + este n. and with the sense ‘right of ownership of ore and metal in found in land’ (compare oredelf n., which apparently shows a similar misapprehension in the same texts):1662 ( Ledger-bk. Vale Royal Abbey in LCRS (1914) 68 132 [We grant..that, in the manors aforesaid, they shall have] soc and sac..ordelf, orest, [and amends of bread and ale].1662 ( Ledger-bk. Vale Royal Abbey in LCRS (1914) 68 136 [And by] orest [he claims to have treasure-trove in his lordship]. Compare also late Old English ornest trial by combat, apparently an alteration of this word after Old English eornest earnest n.1
