Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French orpin.
Etymology: < Old French, Middle French orpin denoting various plants of the stonecrop family (12th cent.), yellow pigment, orpiment (c1262 in Old French; French orpin ), probably an alteration of orpiment orpiment n.It is not clear whether the Middle English form eorþe pyn is a transmission error or shows reanalysis by folk etymology as if < earth n.1 + pine n.1 The forms orpent , arpent show excrescent -t (see T n.).
1. Originally: any of various stonecrops. In later use: spec. the common Eurasian stonecrop Hylotelephium telephium, with flattened fleshy leaves and corymbs of dull purplish flowers (also called livelong); (also) (in full lesser orpine or evergreen orpine) H. anacampseros, native to southern Europe.stone orpine: see stone n.
