Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek Ὀρϕεῖον.
Etymology: < ancient Greek Ὀρϕεῖον, neuter of Ὀρϕεῖος of or belonging to Orpheus (see Orphean adj. and n.). Perhaps compare French orphéon a keyboard instrument (1767).
Now historical.
A kind of musical instrument (not identified).Known only from Cokayne's assertion that it was invented by Thomas Pilkington (?1625–?60): see quots.

1980 New Grove Dict. Music XIV. 749/2 It was this Pilkington [sc. Thomas] who, Hawkins asserted, invented an instrument called the orphion, and who was a musician to Queen Henrietta, wife of Charles I.
