Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin ōstiārius.
Etymology: < classical Latin ōstiārius ostiarius n.; compare -ary suffix1. Compare Anglo-Norman hostiare, hostiarie, Middle French hostier (end of the 14th cent. in an isolated attestation), hostiaire (15th cent. in an isolated attestation; French ostiaire).Forms with initial h- in English as well as Anglo-Norman and Middle French may be after host n.2 or host n.4 or their etymons. Compare also H n.

1. A doorkeeper, esp. of a church; spec. a member of the lowest of the four lesser orders in the pre-Reformation Western Church, and later in the Roman Catholic Church. Now historical.The Roman Catholic order of ostiary was suppressed by Pope Paul VI in 1972.
