Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin osteologia.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin osteologia (1573 Jasolinus) < Hellenistic Greek ὀστεολογία description of bones (in ancient Greek in sense ‘extraction of bones’) < ancient Greek ὀστεο- osteo- comb. form + -λογία -logy comb. form. Compare French ostéologie (1594 in Middle French as osteologie), German Osteologie (1699 or earlier).
