Etymology: < scientific Latin Orontiaceae (R. Brown Prodomus Florae Novae Hollandiae (1810) 337; < Orontium , genus name (Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) I. 324, apparently after earlier use by L. J. Chenon Nova Plantarum Genera (1751) 27; perhaps < Hellenistic Greek ὀρόντιον the name of a plant, perhaps associated with the Syrian river Orontes ) + -aceae : see -aceous suffix) + -ous suffix. N.E.D. (1903) gives the pronunciation as (orǫntiˌēⁱ·ʃəs) /ɒrɒntɪˈeɪʃəs/.

Belonging to or characteristic of the Orontiaceae, a group of plants based on the North American genus Orontium, once regarded as a family but now included in the family Araceae.
