Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Ornithorhynchus.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Ornithorhynchus, genus name (J. F. Blumenbach 1800, in Göttingische Anzeigen von gelehrten Sachen i. 611) < ornitho- ornitho- comb. form + -rhynchus (see -rhynchous comb. form). Compare French ornithorynque (1868 or earlier; 1803 as †ornithoringue, 1805 as ornithorhynque, ornithorinque); for an apparently isolated borrowing of the word in its French form compare:a1836 Encycl. Metrop. (1845) VII. 366/2 In the Ornithorhynque the Muzzle-bones are flat.
Zoology.
A mammal of the monotreme genus Ornithorhynchus; a duck-billed platypus. Now chiefly (as Ornithorhynchus): the genus itself.
